Hello! Have someone heard about Paraguay War (or Tripple Alliance War)?
I assumed that you're almost from North America or Europe. So I decided to start this topic about the Paraguay War. It was a conflict that occured in "Cone Sul" ( an area composed by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguai), between 1864 and 1870. Brazilian Empire, Argentina and Uruguay started a war campaign against the tirannous invasion made by Solano Lopez (Paraguayan dictator) in Brazilian Empire territories. Are you interested in this ?

Sure, sounds interesting. I really don't know all that much about warfare in South America, so it will be fun to learn something new.

Chapter 1- Brazilian Empire Imperialist Policy
Paraguay War starts with a lot of fear and revenge feellings that emerged in response to Brazilian imperialist policy in Cone Sul. United Reign of Brazil, Portugal and Algarve invaded the area that now is called uruguay, in revenge to the Napoleon invasion of Portugal ( Spain was invaded by Napoleoan, that took of throne from House of Bourbon). To avoid invasions from Napoleon made by his puppet state (Spain), D. joão VI of Portugal started an naval invasion of Uruguay. Under Brazilian domination, this area was called Cisplatina. 3 year after Brazilian independece, Argentina started a war with Brazil disputing the dominance in Cisplatina. This war was very extended, in a stalemate situation: Argentina, with a bigger army, was conquering more and more lands, and Brazil, with a bigger Navy, was making huge assaults in argentinian coastal cities. To end the War, Great Britain intervened and criated a "buffer state", to separate Brazil from Argentina: Uruguay Approaching to 1860, Brazilian Empire started it own "big stick" policy. If Brazil cannot have Cisplatina, it will be its Puppet state. So, Brazil started a huge campaign to put a president in Uruguay reppresenting Brazilian willings. Brazil made a military invasion in Uruguay after its chosen president candidate lost the elections. All the Brazilian Imperialist policy atrack attention from a newborn dictatorship: Paraguay. Solano Lopez, an young dictator that received the power fro his father, was intending to create a huge nation, the Great Paraguay. To create this, He need to gain some land to give to their people some vital space and than, struggle against the main power of Cone Sul, Brazilian Empire. Paraguay, to face Brazilian imperialism, guaranted Uruguay's victorious president. Brazil invaded Uruguay, took away the victorious president, and put there its selected President, that would represent Brazilian willings.
The pounding of drums will start... Please, Mr. Octavio and Mr. Blueerynie, could you help me with this story?

Was Simon Bolivar involved in this or was that another war? I hear there were quite a few Europeans fighting in South America like Cochrane.

No, Earl of Rochester. He didn't. Simon Bolivar fought in independence war of Spanish America, specifically in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Equador, Panamá and Venezuela. At the time of Paraguay War (1865 to 1870), Simon Bolivar was already dead. He died in 1830. To show you the countries that was involved int Paraguay War, i will annex here a map.
