England was Brazil's main weapon supplier, but overall they wished to enforce peace. Some French soldiers fought there, since the heir to the Brazilian throne was married to a French prince.

To what extent were European powers involved in South American conflict? European powers weren't directly involved in Paraguay War. Its the major sight of academic historians. Britain was indirectly involved, by selling guns and warcrafts to Tripple Alliance. BUT ONLY A COMERCIAL RELATION . It's common to some marxists historian tho say that U.K funded Brazil to slaughter Paraguay, because Paraguay "was a newborn industrial economy that was confronting U.K industrial dominance". But the main part of Brazilian and Paraguayan historians say that it is false. Paraguay cannot confront Brazilian industrial superiority, even more the U.K industrial dominance. I'll suggest to you a good book. But it's probably only in Portuguese. "Guia Politiamente incorreto da História do Brasil ( Politically Incorrect Guide to Brazilian History) ", from Leandro Narloch. He plunge well into this question.

Interesting. I think I've heard of this war, but I won't know until I hear how the war finished.
As for the future, someone could perhaps make a thread about the war in which Bolivia lost its access to the sea.

Chapter 2- Paraguayan assault. Responding to Brazilian intervention in uruguay presidential election, Paraguay launched a coward atack to Brazilian sovereignty, arresting a brazilian oficial ship that was sailing in Parana's river (river the divides Brazil from Paraguay). This ship was carrying Col. Frederico Carneiro de Campos, an army commander that was provincial president of Mato Grosso ( a brazilian province that has borders with Paraguay). He was arrested and carried to Humaitá stronghold, place where he was left to starve. Without any official declaration of War, Paraguay started to invade Mato Grosso province in december 1864, to initiate the assembling of Great Paraguay and its vital space. To repeal Brazilian invasion of uruguay, Solano Lopez invaded in early 1865 Corrientes Province ( argentinian Province that has borders with Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) and Rio Grande do Sul Province (that has borders with Uruguay and Argentina). In march 1865 Argentina declared war against Paraguay, and Brazil did as well in december 1865. In may 1865, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay set up the Tripple Alliance, ruling their mutual actions on the theatr of operations. Brazilian large territory dificulted the comunications under areas suffering Paraguayan invasions and Imperial staff. Emperor Pedro II knew about the invasion of Mato grosso when paraguayan troops were already marching trhough Corrientes and Rio Grande do Sul. Brazil started to mobilize it troops in April 1865, when a light infantry battalion from Minas Gerais (almost like 2000 km from Mato Grosso invaded areas, 1242 miles) went to front. In september 1866 the battalion reached Laguna( a city invaded by Paraguayan troops) and was forced to retreat due to the intense cavalry charges. Only in june 1867 that Corumbá ( main city in Mato grosso) was liberted from Paraguay. In april 1868 Brazil restaured all it territories from Mato Grosso, because Paraguay moved all of it troops to the main front, in the south Paraguay. next Chapter- Allied assault.

Was there any fighting around the rainforest area? European lands are fairly easy to traverse due to the road networks and rivers, is the same true for South America? You guys have deserts, the Andes mountain range and deep jungles. Did they pose much of a barrier to manoeuvrability and logistics?

You guys have deserts, the Andes mountain range and deep jungles. Did they pose much of a barrier to manoeuvrability and logistics? The area where battles took place is called Charco. It's a transition biome , where it have drowned lands mixed with some savanna plants. But there is not rainforests. The Area of Paraguay lands is almost in subtropical climate , with this charco vegetation. The major difficulty in the war was Parana River , that separates Brazil from Paraguay. It has almost 1.5km wide, the second largest river in south America . The region between Brazil and Paraguay has a really flat topographical pattern, without many hills . So, I think the main difficulty in the battle front was the river Crossing and the Charco , with some swamps.
