I just wanted to see what aspects of the holidays everyone enjoyed most... What little customs or seasonal elements make the holidays special / merry / livable? Whether you celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah or Saturnalia (kidding... maybe), what is something that you just can't go without... (Extra points for photos included in posts - simply because I love pictures! )

Let us revive this thread...
I love the general coziness of the holiday season. Cold outside, warm inside, big blankets, soft clothing, mugs and mugs of hot tea, excuses to hunker down into bed and read bodice rippers watch period dramas obsessively.
Also, as I live for sweets, the holiday season has a magnificent proliferation of pies, cakes, cookies and sundry pastries.

I should have mailed you some of these, @the Duchess (springerle cookies)... though USPS probably would have lost them like your Christmas card. I use fennel instead of anise - the anise can be a bit too intense sometimes!

I just love how much fun my toddlers have. We sing and dance after lighting the menorah, and I toss them up and down, give them presents each night, etc.
And I second the Duchess. The warmth and coziness of being in a little house/apartment with your loved ones while the snow falls outside... it's just a beautiful sensations. Happy Festivus to all!

I enjoy my annual viewing of the holiday DVD trilogy:
We're No Angels (1955) with Bogart and Ustinov, two of the greatest actors who ever lived. Love Actually (2003) because if it doesn't break your heart a little, make you laugh a lot, and cause you to actually cheer at the airport scene, then you have no soul. And we conclude with... Die Hard (1988) because it just isn't Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from the Nakatomi Plaza....

I just love how much fun my toddlers have. We sing and dance after lighting the menorah, and I toss them up and down, give them presents each night, etc. Sounds so sweet... I'm missing my sister's kids this year very much! Usually I try to make them some gifts and decorate a special "kid's tree" for them. With PA's "travel recommendations" they just couldn't make it this year. 😢 Kids really do make the holidays so much fun.

As a kid on Christmas day my family would watch this older movie based on A Child's Christmas in Wales...
As adults we still watch it - one year I used it as a theme to decorate the house since I usually host my fam for Christmas day.
