To keep time, Lully would strike a large staff against the floor, and happened to hit his own foot. This resulted in gangrene, and Lully refused to have his leg amputated so that he could still dance. In the end, Lully died of septicemia from being too enthusiastic a conductor. Do you have a favorite historical character with a strange death? Do tell.

Lupe Velez tripped over and was found with her head in the toilet iirc.
On a slightly different topic a fairly large Japanese force was eaten by crocodiles in Burma. That's gotta suck, mind you the sons of Bushido weren't known for their gentleness

Ragnarr Loðbrók was supposedly killed by King Ælla II, who threw him into a pit full of venomous snakes. Two Norse sagas describe the death.... both Ragnars Saga Loðbrókar and the Krákumál Lay...
The sons of Aslaug all would Rouse the wrath of Hild here With their ruthless sword-blades, If they fathomed fully How far I have traveled, How so many serpents Stab me with their poison. My sons’ hearts will help them; They have their mother’s lineage.
(26th verse from the Krákumál)
