I noticed when I tried to google The History Room nothing came up. I am no technical wizard, but it seems to me if the site can be put on the web more people would be made aware of it and it should boost our membership as we cannot rely solely on Historum members coming over. Over to you admin.

You are right, Von... it would be nice to get more exposure for this forum. Google tends to be the authority on how relevant a website/forum is to people who are searching for certain terms. Things that help Google recognize a site as having more relevance are age of the site (how many times has Google's algorithm "pinged" the site), the number of backward tracing links (people sharing the link here in other locations) and having a lot of new content (threads with good quality information in them).
There are helpful ways to bypass some of these elements and give the History Room a "shot in the arm" so to speak... But one of the most important aspects of getting relevance is making interesting, engaging topics that people can all converse about (which is the fun part) and sharing this site for backward tracing links. Basically the more people who are "pointing" to the History Room as a source for material, the more Google sees the site as an authority. This could be something as simple as saying "Look at this great historical topic I found" and sharing the link on your Facebook account, or using this site as a citation for a blog post...

Thanks for explaining how google prioritise what gets precedence on the web Aurelia. I guess this puts the onus on "we happy few" to up our game, but with the talent we have on board I am sure we are more than capable. Cheers!

That could go one of two ways Earl. We could increase our membership significantly or, the more likely outcome, the site gets pulled on the grounds of the membership not being quite right in the head. Vive le thehistoryroom.boards.net/.

Even better is when your take a phrase or something like Best History Forum and create a link using that term history or maybe history education... basically any combination of words where you can make the key word (" history") part of the text for the link. By making a link to our history forum from another site with more relevance (higher page rank), you get some of the credibility of that authoritative page transferred to The History Room History Forum. Even having the link included in your signature while posting on a established history forum or history website will help add backward links and up our game here.

It also helps to have active topics & membership
