Is anyone here into archery? I tried a replica medieval longbow the other day and it was great fun. The only problem is having enough space to shoot your own arrows. I could quite easily get into historical archery, a pity I don't own a horse...
Does anyone else do archery?

Archery is awesome . I once made a long bow by PVC pipes. It's really flexible and has a nice shot. I recommend to everyone that want a good low cost bow. I tried to make my own arrows, but I gave up. I bought a aluminum hunting arrow, that is quite more steady and tough.

I tried it a few times in school (5th to 9th grade), we sometimes has workshops that included archery. I wasn't halfbad. We used modern bows and arrows though. The only really old school item was a peace of donkey hyde that you put on two fingers, meant to protect the skin from the bowstring.

I'm seriously thinking of buying a longbow, I'd like it to be historically accurate but all the ones I've looked at so far are rather expensive. It's about £500/£600 for a basic yew bow.

The best are made of Yew. I was a bit confused at first as the Victorian style longbows are a mixture of wood and on many sites it's not clear which ones are medieval.
Medieval ones now go the unofficial name of 'warbow' and are made of a single bit of Yew rather than a mixture of others. They also bend less than the Victorian ones and are larger. They'll still set you back about 500+ tho. Ash ones were used too but they weren't as good as Yew.

Ah, then I mixed it up a bit. Didn't know archery was popular in Victorian times.
