Blue Oyster Cult did a song about suckers who lose their dates to the band...
So did Jackson Browne

Ah, yes! Jackson Browne. I can't even think of a person/band I approve of less, and yet somehow the album "The Road" is probably the single most definitive collection of songs of what it means to be a musician. This is the song that did it for them. I'm only sorry they spent their proceeds on drugs instead of themselves....

I had a phase where I went to see a lot of concerts... since moving out away from the city, I haven't seen that many for a few years. My favorite to see live was Muse - saw them a few times in Philadelphia and once at Madison Square Gardens in NYC.
I'd still drop everything to see them again... funny how when the option to do something is no longer available, you want it all the more!

I got to see Johnny Flynn the night before I saw Muse in NYC - he was playing the Mercury Lounge...
I was on a huge Detectorists kick a couple years ago - love the fact that he sings the opening theme - unfortunately it wasn't in his repertoire back when I saw him live.

I guess I love small venues... most of my favorite concerts were in these more intimate settings.
I wasn't sure what to expect of Caribou... they came on very, very late - after a few opening bands (including one called F*ck Buttons, which was pretty freaking trippy). They had two drummers, which made it all quite epic - some live performances fall apart in comparison to the album, but they brought this whole new energy to it.

Right before the Covid shut down hit (literally the week of), I was planning on having a Celtic/folk concert in my house for some friends. One sister played harp - another guitar and bodhran. They were looking to record their music and have a live audience, plus share some food and art. I was really looking forward to it - even took some videos to test the acoustics. It was a shame that they literally had to cancel the event as it fell on the week when some of the government required shut downs hit.

I'm totally with you on small venues. Giant venues are as much about the event as the act, and that can be a good thing too, but to really appreciate an artist you need to hear and see them up close.

I saw this gent (Sam Beam) with Iron and Wine at the Tower Theater... it was probably one of the quietest shows I'd been too - in that way it was like a classical music concert. It almost felt too loud to cough or clear your voice... LOL!
Later, when I saw this sketch... I instantly understood the style they were poking fun at:

Barely remembered indie pop group Plum Tree wrote a song that inspired a comic book that inspired a movie that inspired a video game. They were short-lived, but their high energy power pop was refreshing and fun.
