This thread is dedicated to paintings/photographs e.t.c. of group portraits because we need more art threads in The Room and to remember a time when people were allowed to be within 2 metres of one another. Whether it be a party, a convention, cult gathering, we want to see lots of famous people together in the same place, allowing us to live vicariously through their shared achievements.
I'll start with an obscure one:
The painting "A company of Danish Artists in Rome" by Constantin Hansen was commissioned by the Copenhagen Art Union in 1837. Overseas travel and study was quite the thing for budding Danish artists, the Danish artist's colony in Rome was spearheaded by the famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
Sweeping from left to right are the following:
Constantin Hansen: Danish painter surprisingly born in Rome, godson to Costanze Mozart (Wolfgang's widow) before the family moved to Copenhagen. Spent 8 years abroad in Europe, preferred Italy.
Michael Bindesboll: Danish architect best known for designing the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen. The fez on his head a symbol of his adventures in Athens and Constantinople the year before to study the Acropolis.
Martinus Rorbye: Well-travelled Danish painter who accompanied Bindesboll to Constantinople and Hans Christian Andersen in north Denmark. He also travelled to Skagen, the northernmost town in Denmark which became famous for its artist colony decades afterwards.
Wilhelm Marstrand: Danish painter and illustrator first travelled to Italy the year before, he would return the country throughout his life.
Albert Kuchler: Little known Danish painter who travelled to Italy in 1830, painted a portrait of Hans Christian Andersen before converting to Roman Catholicism in 1844 and spending the last 30 years of his life in a Roman Monastery, focusing on religious paintings obviously.
Ditlev Blunck: Born in Holstein, he disliked the Copenhagen Academy so much he switched to Munich. Four years after this painting he was expelled from Denmark for "homosexual acts", he even fought against Denmark in the first Schleswig War. Despite all that in his final years he was commissioned by the King of Denmark for 4 paintings.
Jorgen Sonne: Danish painter who left the Military Academy after a year to pursue painting. After trips to Germany and Italy he became famous for his battle paintings in both Schleswig Wars.
