Depictions of Famous Gatherings in Art

George Cukor hosted regular parties at his L.A home over the years, in November 1972 he threw one for the director Luis Bunuel along with several other famous faces:

Robert Mulligan: Director of "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Summer of 42" and "The Man in the Moon"

William Wyler: Born in Alsace to a Jewish family, his mother was cousin to Carl Laemmle (founder of Universal Pictures) who invited William to Hollywood in the early 20s. Director of countless Hollywood films including "Dodsworth", "Best Years of our Lives", "Roman Holiday" and "Ben Hur" among others, winning 3 Oscars for Best Director.

George Cukor: Film director was originally slated to direct "Gone with the Wind" but was fired early on (couple scenes he directed remain in the picture). Later directed "Philadelphia Story", "Gaslight" and "My Fair Lady" which earned him a Best Director Oscar.

Robert Wise: Started off his career as an editor at RKO, he edited "Citizen Kane" and saw the full version of "Magnificent Ambersons" before it was cut down by the studio. He later became a director noted for his two musicals "West Side Story" and "Sound of Music" winning Best Director Oscars for both.

Jean-Claude Carriere: French screen writer who first worked with Bunuel on "Diary of a Chambermaid" almost all the way through to the end of Bunuel's career, he even helped write Bunuel's autobiography "My Last Sigh". On top of that he wrote screenplays for "The Tin Drum", "Unbearable Lightness of Being", "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Goya's Ghosts". Still writing at 89 years of age.

Serge Silberman: French film producer who survived the concentration camps during WW2. Aside from producing several of Bunuel's french films, he also produced "Bob le Flambeur", "Le Trou" and Akira Kurosawa's "Ran".

Billy Wilder: First worked with Ernst Lubitsch on "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" until he became a great director in his own right. "Double Indemnity", "Sunset Boulevard" and "Some Like it Hot" are all classics, he won Oscars for "Lost Weekend" and "The Apartment".

George Stevens: Started off as a camerman for Laurel and Hardy shorts before directing Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in "Swing Time". Won Oscars for "Place in the Sun" and "Giant". By the time of this photo he had retired from directing.

Luis Bunuel: Director of films including the surrealistic short "Un Chien Andalou", along with feature films "Los Olvidados", "Viridiana", "Exterminating Angel" and "Belle de Jour". After this photo he would direct two more films before retirement.

Alfred Hitchcock: The Master of Suspense, after this photo he would make his last film "Family Plot".

Rouben Mamoulian: Born in what is now modern-day Georgia to Armenian parents, he directed plays in London and New York before he went into directing films. "Love Me Tonight" and the first three-strip Technicolor film "Becky Sharp" were directed by him. He quit directing after getting fired from "Cleopatra" in 1963.
