While historically embroidery was associated with gentlewomen's past times, it is no exaggeration to say that men wore the most ornate, elaborate and beautiful stitchery of the 18th Century. Women's dressed were rarely arrayed in such intricate embroidery - and the coats and waistcoats of the habit à la française, are replete with gold and silver threads, multicolored silk threads, sequins and beads that could rival even the most ornate gown.
