John MacWhirter (1839-1911) was a Scottish painter who later moved to London, partly inspired by John Everett Millais. His sister Agnes was a still-life painter.

Joseph Backler (1813-1895) was a London-born artist arrested for forging cheques, he was shipped to Australia where he spent 9 years in prison. Upon release he restarted his artistic career painting Australian landscapes.

Jan Frans van Bredael (1686-1750) was born into a family of painters; his father, cousins and grandfather were all painters. He was born and spent most of his career in Antwerp, he enjoyed brief sojourns in London and Paris.

Ludvig Skramstad (1855-1912) was a Norwegian painter influenced by the Dusseldorf art school. Around the turn of the century he received such negative criticism in Norway he worked for an art dealer in Munich until the end of his days.
Fjord
Mathieu Dubus (1590-1665) was born in southern Flanders. Little is known about him, he decorated a Stadtholder's palace in The Hague while his best known works involved rocky landscapes.

Lewis Pinhorn Wood (1848-1918) was a landscape and watercolour artist known to depict Surrey and Sussex.

Harald Jerichau (1851-1878) was born in Copenhagen to an artistic family; his father was a sculptor, his mother and brother were also painters. The final three years of his life were steeped in tragedy; his first and only child died at 3 months, blaming the climate he moved with his wife from Istanbul to Naples, a year later she died. Two years later Harald died from a combination of typhus and malaria.

Pieter Spierinckx (1635-1711) was a Flemish painter and tapestry artist. His patrons included the kings of Spain and France.

William Taverner (1703-1772) was the son of an English dramatist. He later became procurator-general for the Church of England, painting in his spare time.

First snow in Brittany (1881)
Giovanni Battista Lusieri (1755-1821) was an Italian painter who worked for Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies and the secretary of Lord Elgin. Lusieri was employed by Elgin to make sketches of Greek antiquities; it was Lusieri who persuaded Elgin to remove the marbles to protect them from Turkish opportunists who were breaking off and selling pieces to tourists.

Ralph Albert Blakelock (1847-1919) was an American romanticist painter born in New York. With a wife and 9 children to support his inability to sell his paintings at high prices took a heavy toll on him; after several breakdowns he spent the last 20 years of his life in mental institutions.

Alfred Thorne (1850-1916) was a Swedish painter and illustrator who also created an altarpiece for Vimmerby Church

Jan Nepomucen Glowacki (1802-1847) was a Polish painter who lived most of his life in Krakow. Influenced by the Viennese school, he focused particular attention on the Tatras Mountains.
Wawel Castle, Krakow (1847)
George Augustus Williams (1814-1901) was a member of the Williams family of painters. He painted riverscapes of southern England and Wales before moving to London for the last 50 years of his life.

Alexander Scott (1854-1925) was the son of a British portraitist. He spent time in Hawaii and India, he was married to a woman from Philadelphia where he spent many years too.
Diamond head from Tantalus (1908)
Abraham Govaerts (1589-1626) was a cabinet-painter of forest landscapes from Antwerp. He would often paint the landscapes with another artist painting the figures. Govaerts died during an epidemic in Antwerp, his wife followed a couple days later.
Wooded landscape with peasants
Dankvart Dreyer (1816-1852) was a Danish landscape painter in the early romantic period. Under increasing criticism he withdrew from the artistic scene and died from typhus at just 36.

Daniel Charles Grose (1832-1900) was born in Whitby to a family of travelling performers. He later moved to Toronto then New York becoming affiliated with the Hudson River school.
Quebec Rapids (1865)
Jan Wildens (1586-1653) was born in Antwerp, his experiences in Italy saw him turn to landscape painting. He later became friends with Peter Paul Rubens

Adelsteen Normann (1848-1918) was a Norwegian painter who invited Edvard Munch to Berlin. His paintings of fjords contributed to their popularity as a tourist destination.

Eugene Ciceri (1813-1890) was a French painter, illustrator and set designer from an artistic family; his father was a stage designer, his grandfather and uncle were both painters.

Albert Moulton Foweraker (1873-1942) was an English painter who lived in Devon and Cornwall. He also painted Spain, North Africa and southern France on his travels.

Joseph Magnus Stack (1812-1868) was a Swedish painter whose grandfather came from Bologna. He decided against becoming a physician to pursue art. During his travels he contracted malaria which stayed with him for the rest of his life.

Francois Diday (1802-1877) was a Swiss painter born to the son of a watchmaker. His studies in Italy were cut short from lack of funds, he spent most of his time in his native Switzerland painting mountains.
