Andre Jolivard (1787-1851) was a french painter who studied law, fought at the Battle of Leipzig before pursuing a painting career. During Louis Napoleon's coup d'etat in 1851, Jolivard was struck in the wrist by a stray bullet and died from infection.

Despite his travels to England, America and Belgium, Cornelis preferred city and seascapes around his native Netherlands.
