I recently had a quick holiday in Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory.
Darwin has the distinction of being Australia's most destroyed city.
It has been destroyed twice, once by the Japanese in 1942 then again by Cyclone Tracy in 1972.
This got me thinking, which city holds the record for being destroyed and then rebuilt the most.
London has burnt down several times.
Lisbon and Tokyo have both been flattened by major earthquakes.
Berlin, Warsaw, Manila and Baghdad were totally leveled by warfare
How about major towns that were utterly destroyed then never rebuilt. Port Royal in Jamaica and the rather irradiated but not destroyed Chernobyl spring to mind. Lets not forget what the Roman's did to Carthage.
What's the difference between Baghdad and Carthage in terms of rebuilding. Both were absolutely leveled and every living thing inside them exterminated yet Baghdad was rebuilt and Carthage not.

Apparently Belgrade in Serbia was destroyed some 44 times - and saw 115 different wars. It seems like everyone wanted to take Belgrade: the Celts, then the Romans, then the Huns, then the Ostrogoths, then the Eastern Romans, then the Avars, then the Huns again... The Crusaders marched through it 3 times... It seems to just go on and on based on it's location between Europe and the Middle East - it got caught between the Ottomans and the Hapsburgs, the Axis and Allies... it seems like it was constantly being bombed in order to retake it. I had to look up Cyclone Tracy - it seems like it was a bad combination of factors (and right over Christmas  )! It's an interesting question about Carthage... |

Baghdad is located at the narrowest point between the navigable Tigris and Euphrates and as such is a logical place to build (or rebuild) a major trade centre. Carthage was just a nice harbour.
(Darwin only suffered a few hundred casualties during the Japanese raid. Hardly "destroyed").
